Hey Ralph,
I think its more up to the organizers of the group's meetings than it is up to me. I just saw a message on the IRC of the last meeting about looking for alternatives to skype, and I coincidently happened to have just been searching for an alternative to skype, along with Adobe Live Connect.

Its really up to the people who organize the meeting (leftyb?), and what direction they want to take.

As for testing your webcam in linux, you may want to wait for the Jaunty release before you spend too much time there. It looks like there is come uncompleted driver integration in Intrepid that may muck things up a bit.

Also, the webcam software sucks in Ubuntu. I couldn't get cheese to work till I discovered that running it in "verbose mode" makes it work! That's just voodoo weird. And... is there any other webcam capable software? I know of Ekiga, but it crashes on me.

Anyway, take care.

Dan

On Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 1:18 PM, Ralph deGennaro <rmdegennaro@gmail.com> wrote:

Throw, not through! Geesh, I'm rushed...

On Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 1:18 PM, Ralph deGennaro <rmdegennaro@gmail.com> wrote:

Oh crud, I don't even know if the webcam on my laptop works under linux. Or if you have one, or just to check it out I can use it under Mac OS X or Windows.... So sill through out some times. I'll test the webcam under linux in the least before hand.
Hey all,
I've been looking at some skype alternative possibilities. Here are two that I found interesting:
http://www.dimdim.com/products/what_is_dimdim.html
http://www.voiceandvideochat.com/

Neither of these are VOIP soft phones like skype is, but they have similar capabilities. Dimdim is opensource, but only supports a single webcam. VVC seems to support linux (its flash based), and supports multiple webcams, but its not opensource.

I haven't tested these services with other people yet, so if there is interest, we could set up a time to test them out.

So far, for a two person voip call, skype is still the best that I have seen. I tried ekiga and qutephone, and couldn't get either to work.
