​It is well known that only Odd versions of Windows are tolerable :-)

Steve Gibson (discoverer and coiner of 'malware', author of SpinRite and
ShieldsUp) has a tiny executable called Never10 that will silence those
upgrades safely, if you have friends who can't got to 10 or Ubuntu. ​

​Key with that old hardware is making sure a ​32bit image is still
supported by the sub-distro of choice ...​
