Thanks to help from a KDE forum, I have found an answer.

Somehow Amarok playback got muted. Using a program called pavucontrol, I
found a button to un-mute the headphones for Amarok.

I'm guessing I'm an 'edge case' but I posted my information within a
similar question on forum in Launchpad to get the issue into
developer/packager hands.
Thanks for listening, and thanks to all who troubleshoot at any level
within the GNU/Linux community.
