If you do 'sudo apt-get upgrade' or 'sudo apt-get install' for a package set, it will do the requested action(s), and the update manager should show no new updates, since apt-get did them. Update manager, Synaptic, Apt-get-- it's all the same thing, with different front ends.

I was thinking through things, and I remember one thing Martin ran in the terminal at the bug jam was sudo apt-get update. Which might be the reason for me not seeing any updates in the update manager itself.

In firefox installed on my win7 there is an option checkbox under Tools--> Options--> Advanced--> Updates to flag/warn when updates are available and are to be installed.
