I got a little lost in the description of all the things you tried.
However, the problem you're seeing with downloads is not at all that
there are so many packages it will take 1-2 days.

The problem is that the Ubuntu servers are so absolutely slammed right
now that the download time is reeeeeaaalllllyyyyy sssslllloooooowwwww.

Probably your better bet is just to wait a week or so.  Then it won't be
so bad.
