Unlike Windows XP or Vista, Linux works great from an external USB hard
drive.  And after you are confident about 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, you can
even copy it over later to your primary drive (making sure the UUID is
unique & adjust /etc/fstab & grub to point to the new UUID, but you will
cross that bridge when you get to it).
