sound troubles

friends on the MA Ubuntu List,
    I seem to find myself going in circles, so to speak
    I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on a self built Intel box
    I have the Asus P5K motherboard [which has built in sound]
but I've been using Creative Audigy soundcard - have been having
troubles with sometimes no sound / sometimes I do have it
    Have looked for configuration file for sound to no avail
suggestions???
