mount --bind /usr/local/home bind worked like a charm, especially
after I noticed second IDE drive so I could preserve old and let
install do new.

 Thanks for the timely tip!

/dev/hdf1 /
/dev/hdf3 /var
/dev/hde3 /var/local
/home /var/local/home none rw,bind
with two swaps hdf2 and hde2
and my old /etc is available as /media/hde1/etc anytime I need it
without going to USB.
