sound problems

  Hey Martin,
   
  I recently installed Ubuntu 7.10 on an old HP Pavilion 7950 desktop, Originally it had Windows ME (ugh) ,it crashed and I replaced the hard drive,and obviously the o/s
  theres only one problem that I've found, My speakers don't work, I tried every way of connecting them and adjusting audio prefrences , but still, no sound. 
   
  could it be the CPU , the O/S , my speakers? 
   
  any suggestions/ fixes?
