You know when you look at your system in the morning and there's that
cheery orange square with an asterisk thing in it in your notification
area, and when you click on it you get a note that says "There are new
packages to be installed"?

Or, if you go to System -> Administration and choose "Synaptic Package
Manager" and find cool new things to install on your system?

Or, if you go to Applications -> Add/Remove... and find cool new things
to install on your system?  Here they're called "applications", but, in
all of these cases...

Those are the packages we're talking about.
