updates should be much smaller in number too.  Although, I'd suggest you
install "update-manager" along with those applifations listed there.  That
will inform you of when you have updates, and make it easy to keep your
system up-to-date.

Another option is a lightweight distro, like Puppy Linux:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal

or DSL (which is made to be under 50mb installed size on the hard drive):

http://damnsmalllinux.org/
