Ubuntu was my first Linux Love and I typically upgrade versions within 2-3 weeks of a release.<div>However, 11.04 was so buggy that I couldn't run it - I tried several times thinking "Surely, they have that stuff fixed now!" Well, they didn't ("...and don't call me Shirley.")</div> <div> </div><div>Now, I have a netbook that my 3-year-old uses that runs 10.10 Netbook Edition with Unity. It does just fine for what she does (Nick Jr. Games and Videos) so, I'm not totally against Unity.</div><div> </div><div>So when 11.10 came out, I loaded it on a spare laptop and I am testing it out with Unity. So far it isn't anywhere near as buggy as 11.04. I haven't had much time with it yet, so it is still in the "Let's wait and see" mode. Pro: Nothing broke during the upgrade, even though I have a dual-monitor setup and an ATI video card. (I'm weirdly paranoid about in-place upgrades, perhaps from my days using the world's default OS) Pro: My HP Color LaserJet 3600 driver suddenly prints with the right colors. (This broke when I did a complete re-install from 10.10 to 11.04) I leave my desktop up and running continuously, so I barely noticed the new login screen but it did look, in fact, pretty neat. The one con I've noticed so far: The "slam your pointer into the top-left corner of the screen to pull out the " habit that 11.04 instilled in me is no longer valid. So far, so good. Yeah, Oneiric has some pretty annoying issues before I got it to work properly. I had much the same reaction as you are describing when I first tried Unity in 11.4, but I switched back to gnome and now 11.4 and I get along just fine. I'm liking it so far, Unity-3d runs much better on my hardware (last cycle it worked off the live cd, but not on the regular install until an update midway through it started working but slowly) I've switched back to openbox as my main session though.
