Indeed, that's just the default environment.

There's also "Ubuntu Classic", that you can select from the login
menu, which is the more familiar GNOME desktop.

I dunno, Canonical seems pretty bent on pushing this, and willing to
take the flack for changing things.

It may be new, different, and uncomfortable, but I *think* I'd be
disappointed if they pushed hard on Unity now, and then gave up and
just moved to GNOME shell and looked like everyone else. Diversity,
open competition, and the innovations they push, are part of the
reason I came to Linux.

And this was probably the right release to go for it:

A) Every other distro is moving to GNOME 3, and still trying to figure
that out, so people are currently open to new desktop experiences
anyhow. The desktop metaphor was getting a little stale, and now's the
time to experiment.
B) This is not an LTS release, and they still have a couple releases
before they have to polish it up (or, if you're right, rip it out) for
the next LTS version.
