[ubuntu-us-in] Printer/Scanner issue

I tried updating to Jaunty via the update manager and my crappy notebook
evidently doesn't have a good enough graphics card (it's decent enough to
run Intrepid with no special effects enabled). It installed fine, but when
it gets to the login screen the graphics mess up and I can't go any further.
Upgrading my graphics card isn't an option, so is there anything I can do,
or do I need to give up on the so-called wonder that is Jaunty? [?]
