    Wait: I might actually have this one.  On machines with internal 
speakers, there's a control called "Line input sense" or similar.  What 
it means is, should the card sense when the earphones are plugged in?

    I've had this work on two different Netvistas, desktops with 
built-ins. Seems like it's "line jack sense" ("sense" being the 
operative word.)

    Toggle it and see if things get better for you, that way....and 
don't forget to run the preferences on the speaker-applet; let it know 
you want to control the volume from the "headphone" slider, not the 
"main" slider". (So you can roll the wheel-mouse over the speaker and 
set the volume...)
