Ubuntu is spreading...

Well, the mailing list has been quiet for a while now, so I just thought I'd give you some Ubuntu updates from my observations of what's been happening.
As we all are probably aware, the economy is not in good shape. I heard that because of this, our school district is looking at options for software that can alleviate some of its spending. If I remember the numbers correctly, than apparently this is what's happening:
The technology budget for the district is spending roughly 11 million dollars each year to use Microsoft's products. About two-thirds of that comes from the office suite alone. So, they are trying to go through the thinking and planning process, and see what all would be involved to a switch to OpenOffice.org's office suite. In addition, the head IT person is trying/testing at least one variant of Ubuntu on a few different models of the school's computers. Initially on one of them, the system would install fine, but permanetly hang after sucessfully logging in. I have let him know that I'm willing to help if he needs me to try and figure out anything like that. He said he will let me know if he does; right now, though, he's busy with all the other IT work.
Also, for one of the classes I'm in, we will be having a competition where we defend a network against a group of penetration testers. One of the mentors for our team came and handed out Ubuntu CDs, both 32-bit and 64-bit, and both Desktop and Server of both of those, as well as the lozenge stickers. Apparently, that will be one of the operating systems in use during the competition.
It's just so good to see that Ubuntu is, in fact, spreading... even if it is rather slowly.
