I've had mixed results with Debian packages downloaded from the net but at least they're easy to uninstall if they don't work. A side note... Photoshop is cool, and I've been using it heavily for about a decade, but the more I use GIMP the more I like it. It's not perfect and Photoshop does some things better, but I'm just saying don't be afraid to try GIMP out like it is. You can assign key bindings to pretty much anything, so you can work extremely efficiently once you have your main commands/tools/etc. set up properly.
