Most likely not, but you should always backup just in case. Like already mentioned you should have /home on a separate partition if possible. You also need the alternate disc to perform the upgrade if you don't already have it. Otherwise the upgrade won't work. It will ask you if you want to upgrade when the disc mounts.

I want to upgrade to 9.04 from CD Rom. Will doing the upgrade from Rom
destroy my files on the main disk when I upgrade?
