Anything that functions as a USB mass storage device (instead of MTP or
something else proprietary). I've been very happy using the open source
Rockbox firmware on my mp3 player; there is a guide to the mp3 players
it supports at http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/BuyersGuide
If all you want is 2 to 4GB of storage, you could get a cell phone that
uses SD cards and supports mp3 playback; that way you have one less
thing to carry.
