Team support organization & update

There is also the general question of how we want to help out new users.
Should we send them to IRC so they can get more interactive help from us?
Maybe the hassle of getting set up with IRC would be too much for some? Or
maybe the forums? Maybe using the mailing list is fine.

any thoughts?
