An important thing to know about 3G vs. 4G is that all 3G plans I know have restrictions on how much data you can send and receive per month. Typically you buy 2 GB to 5 GB a month depending on your plan and then pay some exorbitant rate if you use more than that. The nicest 3G plans I have heard of let you have 5 GB a month and if you go over it you may purchase another 5 GB block at the same price.
All 4G plans I have seen do not have any such restrictions, you can send and receive without hitting a data size cap.
The device that I have works with 4G on my Macbook. By Ubuntu 10.10 it started to work with Network manager in 3G mode. I am hoping to get it to work with 4G. At least I have a name for the device now: BCSM250
