Actually, it should switch to 2D Unity if there's no 3D support.

Have you installed the Nvidia drivers yet?  If not, I'd log into
classic GNOME instead of Unity and install them through there, then
try Unity.  I don't think it gives any such messages at all.  It
should just revert to classic GNOME if there's no 3D support, but
maybe you have one of the few Nvidia cards that has
semi-existent-but-not-good-yet 3D support in Nouveau?
