For more and more of us common users, the browser is the most-used software
on the computer. I feel that having Ubuntu running for show-and-tell is
100% better if you can show someone a browser connected to the Internet, and
allow them some interaction. In other words, show them Ubuntu ACTUALLY
DOING the things they typically use a computer to do.
I have a Virgin Mobile USB device that I use when in the middle of nowhere
for extended periods, so I can check email, etc. These are nice because
they are pay-as-you-go, so when I am not using (usually about 11 months out
of the year), I am not paying anything. For $10 I can get "100mb for one
week", and it's always more than enough to check email, Google a few things,
etc. It costs $50 for one month of "unlimited" access.
Having just one computer connected is not nearly as nice as having several
(or all of them) connected. With that in mind I just purchased a used
5-device MiFi that is Virgin Mobile branded. I will do my best to have this
functional and available for the Folk Festival, and I will cover the costs.
