Like Ubuntu, Red Hat, Chrome, WordPress, etc.? Or Asterisk, Snort, and SugarCRM?

Some open source projects aren't run well, but the same could be said
for proprietary projects.

Open sourcing WebOS was about the best option as HP wanted to reduce
its investment in the product and apparently couldn't find anyone that
would pay enough for it. HP still has the option to create hardware in
the future and can direct development because they'll likely still
have the largest number of paid developers. I am skeptical of WebOS
gaining any significant market share in the tablet world but it's nice
that the OS isn't really dead either.
