Could also be Plymouth.  Here's how you test:

Hold down shift as soon as you see the BIOS splash.  You should get a GRUB 
menu. Hit 'e' to edit the boot line.  Arrow key your way down to the vmlinuz 
line, and backspace out the "quiet splash" from the end.  It'll boot without 
the Ubuntu logo,  just text. If this works, I think it's likely Plymouth's 
fault. 

Also try adding "i915.modeset=0" to see if it's KMS's problem.
