[DC LoCo] help with software RAID?

Hello, Ubuntistas,

I'm trying to RAID some drives together to provide hard disk redundancy for
a backup server I'm building for a nonprofit organization, but I'm running
into errors after installation is complete.

I've detailed the problem here, if you'd be so kind as to check it out:

existing hardware so as to complete this project within a $300 budget rather
than a $3000 budget, so if it sounds like I'm being cheap -- um, I am.
Hardware RAID was my first choice, but this box has two onboard array
controllers that don't seem to work quite as promised.

Any suggestions are appreciated!
