[DC LoCo] Guidance/Suggestion on Updates and Upgrades

My Ubuntu box came preloaded -from the now defunct madtux.org- with
7.10. I am NOT a programmer nor sys admin but am comfortable on the
command line and can, in minimal cases, troubleshoot. I am NOT a gamer,
not running a business, so my box is for the net, videos, music, some db
(GRAMPS genealogy).....very basic.

A friend who IS a network/sys admin was aghast to learn that I always
update and upgrade when the icons indicate that they are available.
Should I NOT be doing this? Is there THAT great of a risk?
