Dear Friends of the DC Chapter of the ACM:

The DC Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), in
collaboration with the Washington Academy of Arts and Sciences, proudly
presents the February 2008 Lecture:


Speaker:  Dr. Eben Moglen

Professor Moglen has represented many of the world's leading free
software developers. Professor Moglen earned his PhD in History and law
degree at Yale University during what he sometimes calls his "long, dark
period" in New Haven. After law school he clerked for Judge Edward
Weinfeld of the United States District Court in New York City and to
Justice Thurgood Marshall of the United States Supreme Court. He has
taught at Columbia Law School and has held visiting appointments at
Harvard University, Tel Aviv University and the University of Virginia â
since 1987. In 2003 he was given the Electronic Frontier Foundation's
Pioneer Award for efforts on behalf of freedom in the electronic
society. Professor Moglen is admitted to practice in the State of New
York and before the United States Supreme Court. He is also a director
of the Software Freedom Conservancy, and served on the board of
directors of the Free Software Foundation from 2000 to 2007.


Topic:    The Dangers of Software Patents

Dr. Moglen states that free software is a fundamental requirement for a
democratic and free society which is surrounded by and dependent upon
technical devices. He asserts that only if the software controlling
these devices is open to all can we balance power equally.

His talk will be about software patents: the danger that they present to
a free society, to the free flow of information, and to future innovation.


When:     Monday, 11 February 2008.  7:30 PM to 9:30 PM

Where:    American Academy for the Advancement of Science Building
          2nd Floor
          1200 New York Avenue NW
          Washington, D.C. 20005

          The Entrance is on 12th and H Streets NW.
          Near Metro Center Station.

This lecture is free and open to the public.  ACM membership is not
required to attend.

All are welcome to join us for an after-lecture drink at The Capitol
City Brewing Company at 1100 New York Avenue (1 block away from the
lecture).
