I think i read an article about using native windows dll files from another partition. If i rember the article said it was possible, but i think they said it was just easier to copy the dll's over.

as for the dual-boot thing. I think it might be a tricky situation in a school. Do you think they will become comfortable using Linux? If they've never used it before it may take a little getting used to, and they will probably ask you A LOT of questions. On the other hand, having ubuntu as the only OS might force them to give it a try if the are used to "the windows way of doing things".

If you do decide to dual boot i recommend leaving grub so that Ubuntu is default on the menu. That way if they don't pick windows fast enough they are in Linux. however that probably would get annoying if you'd want to use windows everyday. I think it's a tough call. It all depends on how you think they will react. It's always sad when people get angry because it's something they are not used to.

</snip>

There actually is a logical reason. Dell has had to jump through a lot of hoops with the contacts it holds with Microsoft to be able to sell systems with Linux pre-installed in the desktop market... and many stipulations attached to those contacts involve no bulk orders to anyone and also no orders to educational facilities. You could, however, purchase them on a personal account for the school.

I'm sure Dell would LOVE to sell them to you, but they can't ignore the fine print of their agreements with Microsoft.
