I just helped setup a friend at work with Ubuntu 8.04. We also had issues with getting the Atheros AR5007EG Wireless
card working on his new Toshiba (64-bit). We used that exact UbuntuGeek link
step-by-step and it worked like a charm.

-Simon

On Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 1:25 AM, Michael TheZorch Haney <thezorch@gmail.com> wrote:

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, the AMD64 bit version, and I'm trying to get my
wireless adapter to work. Now the "Hardware Drivers" (formerly called
"Restricted Drivers") screen which you find under the Administration
menu shows the drivers from the Athena AR5007EG Wireless Adapter is
"checked" and the Status says it is "In Use". Why would I need
ndiswrapper for this device if Ubuntu already reports that the drivers
are already installed and working? What I need is a way to configure a
connection to the wireless router which I haven't been able to find.
Under Administration~~>Network I find the options for configuring an
Ethernet and PPP Network connection, but nothing for wireless.

There is nothing to be confused about. When I selected the Nvidia
driver in Hardware Drivers under the Administration menu Ubuntu
downloaded the drivers from the repo. I restarted and tried to enable
Desktop Effects under Appearances. This should let me access to the 3D
visual effects of Compiz Fusion through glx. On my laptop I can't it
working. Desktop Effects fails to enable, which is the message I get
when I tried to use them, and the Hardware Drivers screen shows the
Nvidia drivers are checked but its status is Not In Use. On my desktop
where I have an Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 I have a very different problem.
When I select the Nvidia drivers in Hardware Drivers, Ubuntu downloads
them from the repo, and I restart my screen resolution is limited to
640x480 and "Desktop Resolution" doesn't give me any other resolution
options

I'll take this to the Ubuntu support forums I guess.
