I've personally been looking at the Asus eeePC. They run from 299 - 499 depending on what you are looking for. These things seem to work out great as long as your not wanting to play games, and what your requirements are, seems it would work just fine.
Here is a good community wiki model comparison sheet.

1. Estimated battery Life : 2.8 - 3.5 hrs
2. 256 for Surf; 1gig for the 8gb model; most are expandable
3. Screen is a low res VGA (640×480) @ 30 fps

Biggest problems people seem to have is either due to the screen size (7in) or the keyboard size. To me it seems like the perfect couch surfing machine. And to top it all off, it has Xandros Linux installed by default. There is already a working Xbuntu project for it that includes compiz.

I'm looking for a laptop/notebook for as cheap as possible. I would prefer an old ghetto laptop if possible. It doesn't need to be fast or have a big screen, however I do have some minimum requirements:

1. Battery must hold charge or I must be able to still buy batteries with it. Must have a charger.
2. Must have at least 256 mb ram
3. Screen must work

Of course, this will run Ubuntu. I don't want to clutter the list, so please email me privately (

)
Any help appreciated,
Comrade Ringo Kamens
