[CoLoCo] networking question

Hoping maybe someone can help with this.

I have about 8 devices on my home network including a wireless router and a
VOIP box that is also a router (though not used that way). All of this was
connected to a couple more daisy chained routers that ultimately plugged
into my cable modem. It's been working fine for a couple years but I think
one of the daisy chained routers seems to be dying and my network
connection from various devices keeps dropping out.

Instead of buying something, I have a 24 port hub lying around that I
thought I'd try.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work like I expected. Probably because
it's not a router but a hub. I plugged all the devices into the various
ports and then plugged the cable modem into port 1. This results in a
non-working network (i.e. no internet connection). From what I can tell, a
router (like my wifi in my living room) plugged into this hub needs to use
a crossover cable (which I don't have) or be plugged into port 1. But where
do I connect the uplink to the modem? I thought that should connect to port
1 but it didn't seem to work.

I know that sounds complex, the TLDR version:

How do I connect a cable modem to a network hub? Or is this not how it
works?

Thanks,
Jim
