[CoLoCo] graphic issue on dell d505

Hey all,

My father has a dell d505 that is running ubuntu. It was running 8.04 (I
think) and he had some wifi issues so I thought maybe time to upgrade. I
tried booting the 10.4 cd and about the time x would load the screen goes
black and nothing else happens. So I decided to just do a dist upgrade. That
went without a hitch until reboot. Then, about the time x loads the screen
goes black and that's it. Same as with the CD. I don't see why there should
be a graphics issue with a newer version on an old laptop that previously
worked fine with ubuntu.

Anyway, I booted in recovery mode and tried to use failsafex. That fails
with an error about "no screens found". It's been a while since I hacked
this kind of stuff, but the xorg.conf looks pretty normal. Did something
change in x that the upgrade missed?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
