[CoLoCo] Xorg.conf Question

I want to upgrade to the latest Ubuntu from Kubuntu but when I do i
have issues with Xorg not detecting my monitor settings, thus leaving
me at 800x600 without the Nvidia drivers installed and 640x480 with
them installed.  Say I install the latest version, install the Nvidia
drivers, can I then replace the existing xorg.conf file with my own
which has the proper monitor and graphics settings?
