If you think you're going to go the dual-booting route, I'd do that
sooner than later. I know it's less of an issue these days then it has
been in the past, but if you don't do the repartitioning right, it may
require you to start over from scratch (reformatting the entire drive
and reinstalling OS X). I believe they've resolved many of those kinds
of issues, but I know from experience, this is a royal pain the butt.
Intrepid fixed a lot of issues with hardware and the like, but Ubuntu
still doesn't run as well as I'd like it on the MacBook. So if you're
just looking to play around, virtualization may be the way to go. If
you want to be able to use Ubuntu for the full experience, I'd still
recommend dual-booting, even if everything doesn't work perfectly...

No doubtedly, you'll find some frustrating things, but once you figure
out how to configure things the way that you want, I bet you'll be
pretty surprised. For example, make sure you enable all elements to
be tab-able. Otherwise, you're going to be pissed that you can't tab
to the check-boxes in the dialogs....
Have fun!
