1) You ~do~ have a backup, right?
2) Someone smarter than me suggested that you boot to the Ubuntu CD and see what that
gets you.  Have you tried that yet?
3) You might also try KNOPPIX.  It has a more extensive tool-set than the Ubuntu CD.
