I did
[~] sudo mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdb1
Is that different?
/proc/mdstat
md1 : active raid1 sdb2[1](S) sda2[0]
19534976 blocks [1/1] [U]
md0 : active raid1 sdb1[1](S) sda1[0]
291017344 blocks [1/1] [U]
