I am not sure if the SATA RAID controllers are different, but I used to
use a 3-WARE IDE RAID controller.  When I tried something similar, it
did not work for me.  It was almost as if the card was enforcing its own
format on the drive.  All I know is that I could not take a drive from
the standard IDE, and move it to the RAID controller, then mirror it.

But then again, that was their IDE based RAID controller a few years ago
in RH 7.3 (the only version they supported originally), not sure if the
same applies to SATA on Ubuntu.
