[CoLoCo] using a router as wifi card???

I've been booted out of my office so my kid can have her own room. One of
the problems with the move is that my desktop will no longer be wired to my
router/modem and I don't have a wifi card for it. Part of me doesn't want a
wifi connection on my desktop anyway. I suspect it will be slower and
perhaps less secure. However, short of running a long cable which may not
even be feasible, I was wondering if it's possible to connect to a router
with a cable and then make that router talk wirelessly to another router.
I've heard that a Linksys router running dd-wrt can be set up as a range
extender meaning that it would talk to another router rather than directly
to a modem. If that is true, would it matter if you were connected to said
router wired or wirelessly? In short, you would use a wired connection to a
router as a replacement for a wifi card in the PC. Is this possible?
Thanks.
