I had that problem a couple weeks ago with 8.04 Hardy. I'm pretty sure
it means that you have a partially corrupted system. You can press ESC
when it's doing the check to skip it, but I'd recommend visiting the
link to the bug below, and follow the steps needed to run a manual
fsck check in recovery mode. Running a manual check, should not
freeze, and should prompt you to fix errors.
