The freezing symptom makes me think that you may not have burned a
valid copy of whatever livecd you are using. Try to borrow a
known-to-be-good copy of Knoppix (or other) and boot from that. Even
with a good copy, you may need to boot with the noapic option. Quite a
few (mostly older) systems have broke apic support that gives Linux
fits.
