here's what I got in the error log that generated the error 8:

(from /var/log/fsck)

Log of fsck -C -R -A -a
Tue Oct 30 07:16:08 2007

fsck 1.40.2 (12-Jul-2007)
fsck.ext3: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read
while trying to open /dev/sdb1
Could this be a zero-length partition?
fsck died with exit status 8
