Not stated anywhere in this thread but crystal clear from the
referenced url that this is not really a Ubuntu problem but rather a
problem with bios and/or acpi defaults, except for the "laptop mode"
case where the trade off is battery drain vs. hard drive stress.

Other posters in the Ubuntu forums have said that this problem does not occur in Red Hat. It seems to be very prevalent in Ubuntu.
