[CoLoCo] creating menu items in gnome/ubuntu

Alex this might just be what you are looking for. I guess they added
it in Gnome 2.0 or something.

They are called vFolders and from what they talk about in this
document is how everything in the menu system is managed now by this
system. It appears that you can post .desktop and/or .directory items
in /usr/share/applications or $prefix/share/applications. They also
list a few more places and ideas of where to put the files.

Check the whole thing out there is a bit to read but it might be
exactly what you are looking for.
