Looking under the hood of the Linux operating system, Erik Johnson will provide a guided tour of systemd which has become the new init system for more and more Linux distributions. This will be a technical and system level presentation and discussion.
<h2 style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:"times new roman"">Abstract
<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:"times new roman";font-size:medium">systemd is a Linux-only replacement for the old SysV init system which has been around for decades. Beginning development in 2010, it is now the de-facto init system for most Linux distributions. This presentation will give an overview of systemd and some of its numerous subsystems, and demonstrate how to use it to manage services (and more). Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops so they can follow along and experiment with commands on their own. A simple way to check if systemd is present on your laptop is to run "command -v systemctl". If a path is returned (for example, "/usr/bin/systemctl") then you are already running systemd. If not, download a LiveCD from any recent Fedora, SUSE, Linux Mint, or Ubuntu release, and boot into the LiveCD.
<h2 style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:"times new roman"">Bio
<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:"times new roman";font-size:medium">Erik Johnson is a Python developer and former Linux/Solaris system administrator.
