I agree with the sound card, I'd run a live CD and see if that flies, if not pull the sound card and try again.

My question, besides installing a server and adding X is there a boot option to ignore the sound hardware?

Wasn't trying to start a political debate, we've all got our differences of opinion when it comes to this.

All I was trying to say is that there is a solution in the standard repositories that works well for the problem sent out to the list.

I would be opposed to installing any non-free drivers however. I'll take my freedom.

On 3/5/07, Max Luebbe

One of the last boxes I put together was a dual xeon with an agp 6600GT.

Temporary workaround for getting screwed by lousy creative drivers is to enable your ac97 on your motherboard if you've got it via the bios. If you are looking for better audio than that and are willing to spend a few dollars, you can probably find a sound blaster
5.1 live card for $10 or so somewhere on the internet, and this card behaves well under linux.

If you're having problems or haven't tried this yet, this is the way to get stable nvidia drivers for your card:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx
sudo nvidia-glx-config enable

then restart x or reboot if you're feeling lazy, and you should be up and running.

Hope that helps.

-Max

from the research i did a month or so ago on a creative soundblast
audio card, Creative doesn't like linux, or at least their audio
cards.

On 3/5/07, RJ Marsan <
