Hi Bob,

I am glad to hear you found a way around your issue. Not everyone is
so lucky to have different hardware to use. FYI, a quick google for
"launchpad intel 13.10" found some issues that are interrelated (some
resolved) between the intel driver, mesa and compiz with some
work-arounds you or others might be interested to try. I hope these
components "work like they are intended to work" in time for the
release of 13.10.

No distro can get around trying to help the upstream software become
more hardware compatible. To be fair, the work to make the software
more hardware compatible does take on a different nature when a distro
chooses to change it's role by taking on a new responsibility and
becoming the upstream for a replacement software project. This is
certainly the extremely rare exception to the norm. The new project
will need plenty of help from users, packagers, distros and developers
to test on new hardware platforms if it is to be successful like any
other upstream software project used to support hardware
compatibility.

My old Radeon HD 6320 in this Lenovo G575 laptop is thankfully working
well using the free kernel driver "radeon" and lxde with Precise. When
I installed the machine the open source driver "wasn't ready yet" and
had some issues but now the open driver works better for me,
especially with suspend/resume. I found that some of the following
debugging steps are not very time efficient or trivial to fully
comprehend. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume

Cheers,
Grant
