Several years ago, I carved out a budget of a few hundred dollars, in order to obsolete my Windows XP laptop. The plan was to purchase an SSD and a copy of Windows 8.1 so I could virtualize it. Well, the plan succeeded. I did use the SSD for my root/system drive under Ubuntu, and this resulted in massive speedups, especially for the scheduled update/upgrade/reboot cycles.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:"times new roman",serif;font-size:large"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:"times new roman",serif;font-size:large">My choice of drive was the SATA Intel 480GB:</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:"times new roman",serif;font-size:large"><div class="gmail_default">[ 1.883124] ata2.00: ATA-8: INTEL SSDSC2BP480G4, L2010420, max UDMA/133</div><div class="gmail_default">[ 1.889056] scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA INTEL SSDSC2BP48 0420 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5</div><div><br></div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:"times new roman",serif;font-size:large">My existing system is of 2010 vintage, an i5-2400 with 8GB RAM and a 1TB Western Digital Green HDD. My current system is Ubuntu 18.04 bionic; I run VirtualBox with various Linux and Windows VMs. For the most part, I utilize the SSD for the VDIs as well, and this tends to help, especially the sluggish ones such as Windows 2016. I do cheat and store a little personal data on it, because it has space; my /home/rearl lives on the HDD, and so do my online backups.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:"times new roman",serif;font-size:large"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:"times new roman",serif;font-size:large">I have been duly impressed by SSD performance and reliability, such that I won't easily consider anything else now. My next laptop will have only SSD in it. My next disk expansion will likely be SSD, although I've been considering a NAS, and it is said I want HDDs in a networked storage appliance, so the jury is still out there.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:"times new roman",serif;font-size:large"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:"times new roman",serif;font-size:large">I would certainly opt for the Intel brand again. The price was right, the packaging was utilitarian, and the installation was straightforward.
