I've not been able to reproduce the compilation error you're fixing: the package builds fine in a sbuild environment and it does not appear as failing at http://people.ubuntuwire.org/~wgrant/rebuild-ftbfs-test/test-rebuild-20090909-karmic.html .
Can you elaborate?

Otherwise, the patch looks good. Only one small comment: do no bump
Standard-Versions on Debian package. This can be done on Ubuntu
packages, but this should be done by Debian on Debian packages.
