Apparently this has already been fixed in Debian:

   * debian/patches/13_avahi_fix_and_handle_restart.dpatch:
     + Rewritten; the previous fix made the code work on UP but uncovered
       the racy-by-design nature of the code. Switch to ThreadedPoll instead
       of SimplePoll.

So, Ubuntu? ;)
